Stories are basic to life. Everybody loves a good story. We have been reading, listening to, or watching stories all of our lives, so we intuitively know a lot about how they work. Yet, more and more, Christians are unfamiliar with the stories of the Bible and how the grand narrative of God's Word fits together. Indeed, God gave us the stories of the Bible to reveal great truth about Himself and about our lives, and He wants to draw us into the ongoing story of what He is doing in the world. By focusing on the narrative framework of Scripture we can better understand what the Bible teaches and live out its instruction more effectively.
"Reading God's Story" takes that clear narrative approach to the Bible, arranging the complete text into a fresh chronological reading plan developed for the Read the Bible for Life biblical literacy initiative. In this plan the books, chapters, and verses of the Bible are thoughtfully arranged so readers can track the story of Scripture, day by day, from beginning to end, understanding the flow of events and how all the different parts fit together to make sense.
"Reading God's Story" features two-color interior page layout and is organized into 52 weeks of readings (six readings per week). It presents Scripture in three main acts (God's Plan for All People; God's Covenant People; God's New Covenant People) and seventeen total scenes, providing an introduction for each act and scene to orient the reader to its importance in the grand story. Unlike other chronological Bibles, this arrangement is not date specific (e.g. "January 1"), so a person can begin using this edition at any point in the calendar year.

An awesome book, in many ways. *** This book is for those who want to go through the Bible but are thwarted by the Bible's shifts from history to law to history to poetic wisdom, followed by prophetic pronouncements that seem divorced from an historic context--a feat that is for the severely diligent. *** This "through-the-book-in-a-year" Bible is nice because it partitions the Bible as a three-act play, broken into scenes. The first Act is God forming creation and bringing judgment with the flood. Act Two is the forming of a covenant people, moving from Abram through the rise and fall of the Davidic kingdom. Act Three is the New Covenant, from Jesus' ministry to his death and resurrection and the formation of the church and its missionary movement, including the epistles and Revelation. *** How is this book assembled? Impressively, the Scripture is laid out chronologically but also thematically. For instance, the Creation story of Genesis 1 & 2 is followed by a portion of John 1:1-13 and Psalm 104, which glorifies Christ and the joy and majesty of God in Creation. The next day's reading tells of the Fall of Man. You get the idea. The reader gets history and wisdom and the purpose of Scripture daily, as each day begins with an engaging observation and a summary of the day's reading. At the end of every week is another summary of events and overview of God's ongoing story. The week ends with a prayer of thanks to God, fitting that theme. *** Duplicate stories are treated carefully and not merged into one telling. For instance, the story of Jesus in the Garden, his arrest and arraignment before the high priest, along with Peter's denial in the garden are presented in the order of the Gospels; so Matthew gives his rendering, then Mark, then Luke, then John. These are the reading for Week 45, Day 1. *** At the end of the book is an index of the Bible, telling where the Books and chapters are displayed. The Psalms are scattered throughout the book, reminding the reader how timeless are these songs, speaking of God's power and his redemption through Christ, even to the Book of Acts, where Psalm 110 follows Peter's confession to the Sadducees regarding the prophecy of David, regarding the Christ. *** The final feature of the book are eight wonderful maps, preceded by several pages of lined pages for the devoted to pen their own thoughts. *** The book has a well-bound beautiful cover that offers an additional feature, a QR code to download the app and Daily Chronological Audio Podcasts, so you can "read, listen, track, share." Awesome.
